The BYU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to sponsor a
university-wide outstanding research paper competition
for undergraduate students.
Criteria for Research Papers
To be
considered for an award, the research paper must be nominated by
the BYU faculty member or administrator for whom it was written
and should meet the following criteria:
The paper should be an academic paper
written for
any regular course.
This does not include Honors theses, papers written for
independent research credit classes, multiple-authored papers,
papers which have already been published, papers that have been
submitted to a journal and have received peer review, and papers
written solely for a national or international conference. A professor may nominate more than one paper.
The paper must be double-spaced and be 8 to 30 pages in length.
The paper should follow the
accepted writing and documentation style
for the discipline in which it is written (e.g., MLA, APA,
etc.).
The paper should have a cover page with the heading Phi Kappa
Phi Annual Student Paper Competition. Also on the title
page list the name of the author, title of the paper, year in
school, current phone number, current address, and name of
nominator. The body of the paper should NOT carry a header or
footer containing the author's name.
The paper must be in English. Foreign language papers must be
translated into English to be eligible for the competition.
The nominator should complete the Phi Kappa Phi nomination form
(see link below) with the help of the author, and both sign
where indicated. Submit the paper as a single PDF file to
Dr. Delys Snyder at
pkpwritingcontest@gmail.com.
Please do not send different files containing title page,
abstract, references, appendixes, etc. A hard copy of the Phi Kappa Phi
nomination form should be
completed and sent by the faculty member or administrator via
campus mail to Delys Snyder, English Department, 4198 JFSB, at
the time the paper is submitted electronically.
Papers written during the calendar year 2011 are
eligible for submission and will be considered for awards to
be given the end of March 2012.
The Submission deadline is January 20, 2012.
A committee composed of Phi Kappa Phi
members will read and select the First
Place and Second Place winners for each
class level.
Established criteria will
be used to judge the papers.
The First Place winner at each class level will
receive a $400.00 award and a certificate from Phi Kappa
Phi.
The Second Place winner at each class level will
receive a $200.00 award and a certificate from Phi Kappa
Phi.
Authors of the First Place and Second Place papers
will be honored at a banquet on March 21, 2012 where
they will receive their awards and certificates.
The names of the authors of
the First Place winners will be inscribed and displayed on a
permanent plaque in the Harold B. Lee Library honoring the
winners of the Phi Kappa Phi paper competition.
