BYU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Annual Student Paper Competition

The BYU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to sponsor a university-wide outstanding research paper competition for undergraduate students.



Criteria for Research Papers

To be considered for an award, the research paper must be nominated by the BYU faculty member or administrator for whom it was written and should meet the following criteria:

    1. The paper should be an academic paper written in conjunction with any regular class. This does not include Honor Theses, papers written for independent research credit classes, papers which have already been published, multiple-authored papers, and papers written solely for a national or international conference.

    2. The paper must be double-spaced and be 8 to 30 pages in length.

    3. The paper should follow the accepted writing style for the discipline in which it is written (e.g., MLA, APA, etc.).

    4. The paper should have a cover page with the heading Phi Kappa Phi Annual Student Paper Competition.  Also list the name of the author, title of the paper, year in school, current phone number, current address, and name of nominator.   The body of the paper should NOT carry a header or footer containing the author's name.

    5. The paper must be in English. Foreign language papers need to be translated into English.

    6. The nominator should complete the Phi Kappa Phi nomination form with the help of the author and both sign where indicated. Submit the paper as a PDF file to Kristine Hansen at kristine_hansen@byu.edu. A hard copy of the Phi Kappa Phi nomination form should be completed and sent by the faculty member or administrator via campus mail to Kristine Hansen 4177 JFSB at the time the paper is submitted electronically.



Judging Procedures

    1. Papers written during the calendar year 2009 are eligible for submission and will be considered for awards to be given the end of March 2010.

    2. The Submission deadline is January 22, 2010. .

    3. A committee composed of Phi Kappa Phi members will read and select the First Place and Second Place winners for each class level.

    4. Established criteria will be used to judge the papers.




Awards

    1. The First Place winner at each class level will receive a $400.00 award and a certificate from Phi Kappa Phi.

    2. The Second Place winner at each class level will receive a $200.00 award and a certificate from Phi Kappa Phi.

    3. Authors of the First Place and Second Place papers will be honored at a banquet on April 3, 2008 where they will receive their awards and certificates.

    4. The names of the authors of the First Place winners will be inscribed and displayed on a permanent plaque in the Harold B. Lee Library honoring the winners of the Phi Kappa Phi paper competition.
